Cherry Red Records

Saturday 10-12pm

Founded by Iain McNay in 1978, UK record label Cherry Red has continued to uphold the same fiercely independent values since day one. Renowned for its diversity, the label had early successes with artists ranging from the Dead Kennedys to Everything But The Girl, The Monochrome Set and Felt – going on to release the ground-breaking compilation Pillows & Prayers in 1982.

Today the label is one of the most prolific in the UK with over 400 physical releases each year; predominantly catalogue gems including many fascinating and ground-breaking compilation box sets. The current roster of (mainly maverick) artists recording new albums includes Hawkwind, Luke Haines, Pere Ubu, The Strawbs, The Residents, Rosalie Cunningham, Anthony Phillips, Blackheart Orchestra, Steve Howe, Nick Beggs, Claudia Brücken, Go-Kart Mozart and Jah Wobble. Cherry Red also represents the catalogues of a number of unique artists including Kim Wilde, Howard Jones, Dinosaur Jr, The Fall and Hawkwind. The label has close ties to the sporting world, sponsoring League 1 Club’s AFC Wimbledon’s stadium and Wycombe Wanderers’ home shirts.

Cherry Red Radio is conceived and crafted by Iain and came about after hearing positive vibes from fellow Boogaloo DJs Luke Haines, Alan McGee and John Leckie. The show delves into the independent label’s sizeable vaults to bring you 2 hours of music inspired by one of the most eclectic and prolific labels in the world.

Hear a mixture of Cherry Red and non-Cherry Red acts, both old and new, including songs from compilation box sets and every genre under the sun.

Iain and Cherry Red are staunch supporters of buying music in physical form and only plays music that can be bought on CD or vinyl.
